GUWAHATI: Street Animal Welfare: Guwahati organized a police sensitization workshop recently at Police Reserve conference hall, Paltan Bazar on 'Animal Protection laws'.

Approximately 50 police officials of the rank DCP, ACP, Inspector, Sub Inspector, and constables attended the workshop. The resource person for the workshop was renowned animal activist Gauri Maulekhi. Street Animal Welfare: Guwahati was started in April, 2018 and has been working tirelessly since then for the rescue, treatment and rehabilitation of stray and abandoned animals. SAW also works on animal advocacy and has been working closely with government authorities and administration to bring in regulations and for implementation of laws in various issues of animal welfare.

SAW runs an animal shelter situated in Boragaon which serves as the home for rescued animals, most of which are special need dogs.

Maulekhi, who is the Trustee of People for Animals and Member Secretary of PFA, Uttarakhand, serves as a resource person and a trainer for the State Police for more than eight states. Through her efforts of seeking judicial intervention of Courts, Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Regulation of Livestock Markets) Rules, 2017, The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Dog Breeding & Marketing) Rules, 2017 and The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Pet Shop) Rules, 2018 were notified by the Government of India. She was also awarded the prestigious Nari Shakti Puraskar 2018 by the President of India, for her contribution to the field of animal welfare advocacy.

Maulekhi discussed all the important sections under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 and also about the dog breeding rules, case property animals rules and slaughter house rules. After that, Rashmi Choudhury, Founder, Street Animal Welfare, talked in depth about different animal welfare issues prevailing in the city and mostly about the frequent dog smuggling cases, unregistered pet shops and breeders and unregulated livestock markets and dairies.
