GUWAHATI: Polls to the various urban local bodies will be held once the green signal is accorded by the Health department. This was stated by Urban Development Minister Ashok Singhal on the floors of the Assam Legislative Assembly on Wednesday. He added that the Health department's nod is presently needed due to the ongoing pandemic.

Mentionably, the five-year terms of all the Municipalities ended in March 2020. However, the polls could not be held due to the COVID-19.

Meanwhile, the House passed 'The Assam Municipal (Amendment) Bill-2021'. The Bill states that if the polls to the local urban bodies are not held then the DCs (Deputy Commissioners)/ SDOs (Sub Divisional Officers) — Civil)/ officers nominated by them will remain in charge of such Municipal boards up to two years. The Bill amends the earlier provision whereby the officials concerned remained in charge of the respective Municipal Boards up to a maximum period of 12 months.
