Guwahati: An awareness meeting on air pollution and its mitigation measures was organized on Friday at the B Borooah College here by the Guwahati Regional Office-I, Pollution Control Board Assam (PCBA) in collaboration with the college authority, stated a press release.

Dr Arup Kumar Misra, Chairman, PCBA, was the Chief Guest of the event. Dr Misra delivered an interesting speech where he laid stress upon sustainable development, eco-friendly lifestyle, scientific disposal of waste, tree plantation and students' participation in the endeavours of the PCBA for abatement of pollution.

During the meeting, Senior Environmental Engineer-cum-Regional Officer, PCBA, Gokul Bhuyan spoke about air pollution, causes, its effects and its mitigation measures. He encouraged the students to take initiative to take all possible measures including tree plantation to control air pollution and act as a responsible person to reduce air pollution in Guwahati city.

The Resource Person, Dr Bijay Goswami, Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry, B Borooah College, also spoke on air pollution and its abatement strategies of the Government. He dwelt on the recommendations of the World Health Organisation (WHO) regarding various activities to be carried out at individual level to minimize pollution.

The meeting was organised under National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) of India. Dr Satyendra Nath Barman, Principal of B Borooah College, presided over the meeting and delivered his comments on the event. During his speech, he appealed all the stakeholding departments to work together to achieve the goal of the NCAP and suggested that the students should lead their lives in an environment-friendly way and stressed on reduction, reuse and recycling of plastic waste and composting of biodegradable waste.
