GUWAHATI: A large number of citizens of Guwahati woke up to very disgusting scenes on the streets on Thursday morning. Due to heavy showers that continued overnight on Wednesday, drainage systems across the city overflowed, thus dumping huge amounts of garbage on the streets. With the lack of any mechanism to clean up the garbage, the citizens were forced to carry on their daily routine as they walked or drove over the garbage.

Several locations across the city, including Anil Nagar, Chandmari, Hatigaon, Jatiya, Hatigaon, and Ganesh Mandir, were inundated by the rains. As the water overflowed the drains with rainwater, huge amounts of waste, mainly plastic items, were dumped on the roads. In the places where the flood water was not cleared, the same garbage was seen floating on the water, making it even more disgusting for people to move through. Meanwhile, work continued on war footing in several places to clear the localities of urban flooding in the morning hours to avoid problems in these areas. But no action was taken to clear the garbage accumulated on the streets.

A person living in the Chandmari area of Guwahati mentioned, “How long should we suffer because of the inability of the government to resolve the problem of urban flooding? Politicians at both the legislative and ward levels promise that they will solve this problem, but no result has been seen so far. We wake up to this disgusting situation and have to walk over it to reach our offices and schools. How much longer does it need before they even try to solve this problem?”

Another person who is a resident of the Anil Nagar locality said, “The GMC claims that they have spent crores of rupees to prevent flooding, and we wonder where that amount of money goes since we see no change in the scenario. One night of heavy rain leads to flooding of the streets and garbage floating all around.”

Another person questioned,” If the GMC is collecting garbage from our households and businesses and charging hefty amounts for the same, how come there is so much garbage on the roads?”
