GUWAHATI: The proposed premium cut for land settlement is good news for the eligible urban landless families in the state.
Following a directive from Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Revenue and Disaster Management (R&DM) Department has already prepared a cabinet memorandum (proposal) to cut premiums for giving land settlement to eligible urban landless families. The department has already sent the proposal to the cabinet for consideration. The proposal has the nod from R&DM Minister Jogen Mohan.
After assuming the office of the Chief Minister, Sarma noticed that a family getting land settlement in an urban area has to pay more than the government land value in some cases. Many urban landless families cannot pay their land premiums even after getting a land settlement from the Revenue and Disaster Management Department because of the staggering burden of premiums. It led the Chief Minister to instruct the R&DM Department to reduce the premium for land settlement in urban areas.
When The Sentinel contacted the Revenue and Disaster Management Department on the proposed reduction of the burden of premium, sources in the department refused to divulge anything in detail as the issue is under consideration of the cabinet. They, however, said that it would benefit the eligible urban landless families.
