GUWAHATI: Ashok Kumar Deb, an official of Press Information Bureau (PIB) who had been living in this city for the past several decades, was not only a frustrated man on Saturday after publication of the final NRC. He was also ashamed to disclose his identity.

“Names of four of my family members have been excluded from the final NRC. Such unfortunate development has happened despite the fact that my late father Anil Baran Deb possessed Indian Passport of 1955 and Citizenship Registration Certificate issued in 1956. We enclosed all such legal documents while submitting NRC application,” Deb said.

Names of Deb’s family members appeared in the complete draft NRC published in July 30, 2018. But names of four family members including Deb, his son and brother included in the Additional Draft Exclusion List in June this year.

Deb said his family members had submitted claims to include their names in the final NRC with all relevant legal documents. He said his family has piles of documents issued before March 24, 1971 to prove their Indian citizenship. “The officials at my NRC Sewa Kendra at Udalbakra were satisfied with documents I had produced. Being an Indian to the core of my heart and soul I feel ashamed now to identify myself. Why should I go to foreigners’ tribunal to judge me as an Indian? Exclusion of my family from the final NRC is such humiliation and pain that we will never forget till our death,” Deb said, appealing to the ruling regime to do justice to his family.
