GUWAHATI: The prime accused in the sensational Chatribari robbery case died in police firing on Wednesday.

On April 4, a sensational robbery took place in the residence of Goutam Chajjer, Kiran Shree Apartments, Chatribari under Paltan Bazar PS. The miscreants looted valuable jewellery and cash Rs 11 lakh. On receipt of an FIR, a case vide Paltan Bazar PS Case No. 186/2022 U/S 392 IPC was registered.

During the course of investigation, a special operation was immediately conducted on the night of April 12 by Guwahati City Police under the leadership of Partha Sarathi Mahanta, Joint Commissioner of Police, Guwahati. The police team arrested Bhoni Nath (32), wife of Rahul Roy, Naowboisha, Lakhimpur, who worked as housemaid in the victim's residence. After her rigorous interrogation, a team of city police was able to arrest the kingpin and prime accused, namely Md. Taijuddin Ahmed, son of Md. Tazim Ali, Shanua village, Sipajhar, Darrang district from his hideout at Sadilapur of Jalukbari area. Soon after arrest, his place of stay was thoroughly searched and as per revelation made, the police team immediately rushed to Sipajhar, Darrang district for recovery of the looted amount in the incident.

On arrival, the police team searched his house at Shanua village and recovered Rs 60,000 from his possession. The accused again led for the recovery of additional cash amount from another location at Sanuatari village and during search, the accused person all of a sudden fired, aiming at the police team in the wee hours of April 13 from his pistol which he had kept hiding in the place under the jurisdiction of Sipajhar Police Station. The police team in retaliation fired in self-defence and as a result, he sustained grievous injuries. He was immediately shifted to the Mangaldoi Civil Hospital and the attending doctor declared him dead.

In the incident, one police personnel, Mridul Nath (33) of Paltan Bazar PS sustained minor injury and was admitted in the Mangaldoi Civil Hospital for treatment.

Simultaneously, another operation was launched by City Police near Fulbari area of Assam-Meghalaya border under Dhubri district in search of the other co-accused and four dreaded dacoits involved in the case, namely Manowar Hussain, son of Rahimuddin of Fulbari; Aizur Ali, son of Minhaz Ali of Fulbari, Dhubri; Siddique Ali, son of Sikon Ali, Chandubi, Fulbari, Dhubri; and Mohibul Haque, son of Danish Ali, Tupni Laokhowa, South Salmara, were arrested. During search, the robbed jewellery were recovered from the house of the accused Mohibul Haque.

Partha Sarathi Mahanta, Joint Commissioner of Police, Guwahati said that in the last week, seven bodies were recovered from various parts of the city, out of which five cases are unnatural or suicidal in nature without any criminal intention. The remaining two cases are being investigated thoroughly for logical conclusion.
