Prime accused in Garigaon gang-rape case shot dead in encounter

GUWAHATI: Biki Ali, the prime accused in the gang-rape of a minor girl in the Garigaon area near here recently, was shot dead by the police in an encounter on Tuesday night.

According to the DCP (West), Nabneet Mahanta, the police traced and apprehended Biki Ali from Dampur in Hajo in Kamrup district. After preliminary interrogation, he was taken in a police vehicle to help locate the other accused persons in the case. After reaching the Garbhanga area on the Assam-Meghalaya border, the police team and Biki Ali got down from the vehicle to locate some other culprits. Then Biki Ali snatched the service revolver of the OC of the All Women Police Station, Panbazar, Twinkle Goswami, and fired two rounds at the police team. Biki Ali by hit by bullets when the police team retaliated in self-defence. OC Goswami and ACP Bhanita Nath sustained minor injuries in the incident.

All three were rushed to the Dhirenpara First Referral Unit (FRU). From there, Ali was referred to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), where he was declared as 'brought dead'. According to GMCH sources, Biki Ali sustained four bullet injuries – three on his back and one on the right side of his chest.

It may be recalled that Biki Ali and four accomplices had gang-raped a minor girl on two separate occasions and even taken video footage of the crimes.

The other culprits, who are absconding, have been identified as Md Fijul Ali, Puna Ali, Pinku Ali and Raja Ali.

A case (No. 19/2022 u/s:-376 (D) IPC; r/w Sec 6 of Pocso Act; r/w Sec 67(B) 0f IT Act) was registered at the All Women Police Station, Panbazar in this connection on the basis of a complaint lodged by the victim's mother.
