Prof Nripendra Nath Sarma no more

GUWAHATI: Prof Nripendra Nath Sarma, former Professor and Head of the Geography Department of the erstwhile Cotton College and a resident of Juripar, Guwahati, passed away on Wednesday due to old-age ailments. He was 84.

A popular teacher of Cotton College, from where he retired in 1997, Prof Sarma's greatest contribution is towards numbering of houses in Guwahati city.

It was Prof Sarma, who as Secretary of Juripar Unnayan Samiti in 2001 first introduced house numbering at Juripar and also numbering the by-lanes. Till 2001, houses in Guwahati had no numbers.

"A true geographer apart from being a responsible citizen, Prof Sarma, as Secretary of Juripar Unnayan Samiti in 2001, mapped the entire locality and numbered all the 200-odd houses and vacant plots in the 16 by-lanes which then constituted Juripar. He also abolished the by-lane names and replaced those with numbers, so that a visitors did not have to ask shopkeepers or other people for a particular resident.
