GUWAHATI: On the occasion of the 6th Ayurveda Day, a protest was staged outside the Assam Small Industries Development Corporation (ASIDC) office at Bamunimaidam in the city.

Activists of the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), Assam gathered outside the ASIDC office to strongly protest against the handover of Assam Ayurvedic Products, a State-owned public industry, to Baba Ramdev-Balakrishna's private organization Patanjali.

Notably, Assam Ayurvedic Products was established under ASIDC in 1967 and it has been naturally manufacturing life-saving medications in its 118 acre land in the Kamrup rural district, thereby generating employment to hundreds and manufacturing 150 different types of ayurvedic medicines to date. The government has drastically decreased the number of medical officials from 75 in 2016 to just 17 in the present time. President of AITUC, Assam, Munin Mahanta, general secretaries Ramen Das and Phanidhar Das were present during the protest. They also pointed out the fact that the Patanjali industry established in the land allotted near Tezpur was bringing employees from outside despite their promise of employing local people.
