GUWAHATI: Pankaj Thakur, a renowned author, passed away on Thursday at his residence at Ambikagiri Nagar, Guwahati.

He was 76.

Previously, he also worked for The Sentinel English daily and contributed with his vast experience of knowledge and literature.

Born in Dergaon, Pankaj Thakur did his primary schooling in his native place and later on completed his graduation from Cotton College, following which he did his Masters in Economics from Gauhati University.

In his professional career, Pankaj Thakur retired as the branch head of TATA Motors, formerly known as TELCO, in Guwahati.

With a flair and love for literature right from his school days, Thakur authored a handy collection of books which was well received by the readers. His book translation was widely recognized, for which he was bestowed with the Academy Award for Translation.

Since translation was his real forte, following his passion he translated titles in Assamese such as Gana Satra, Bidisna Baghjai, Mahanayak (Marathi), among others.

He also edited quite a few magazines as well, the latest being the Times of India Group's 'Amar Samay'.

He has left behind his wife, his son and two brothers along with a host of relatives and friends.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed his condolence at Thakur's demise and acknowledged the deceased's contribution to literature.
