GUWAHATI: During the last summer vacation, i.e., in the month of July, Assam State Zoo-cum- Botanical Garden collected more than Rs 24,20,410 from the visitors. An official of the Assam State Zoo-cum- Botanical Garden informed, “It seems to have become a tradition for students and parents from different parts of the state to visit the zoo, especially during the summer holidays. This time, 1,11,227 people from different parts of the state, including Guwahati, visited the Assam State Zoo during the summer holidays. As a result, the zoo authorities collected a total of Rs 24, 20, 410 from the visitors, with a ticket rate of Rs 13 for the student and Rs 33 from other visitors. Each day, the zoo’s visitors are varied. The number of visitors fluctuated over the month of August. Based on the visitors, the collection varied from Rs 70,000 to Rs 30,000 daily.”
The zoo authorities said that there are 1,272 animals and birds in the zoo as of March 2023. To feed these animals and birds, the authorities spend Rs 5 to 6 crore annually. More than 200 government employees work accordingly for the animals.
New species have been brought to the zoo from abroad, among them one giraffe, two Zebras, and four mandarin ducks. Currently, the zoo has a total of 1,272 animals, including two giraffes, nine tigers, more than 200 deer, four peacocks, five lions, four crocodiles, 50 turtles, 22 monkeys of six species and 50 rhinos.
