GUWAHATI: The Sadou Asom Sanmilita Shikshak Mancha (SASSM), an umbrella organization of teachers, has opposed the State Government's decision to implement a policy to mandatorily change the medium of instruction for the Science and Mathematics subjects to English for Classes-I to XII in all Government and provincialized schools.

The organization has also opposed the Government's decision to run parallel classes in the English medium in at least five to ten schools in each district.

The SASSM's voiced its opposition to the Government's decisions following an online meeting of its constituent organizations on Tuesday, which was chaired by its president Ranjit Borthakur.

Talking to The Sentinel regarding the decisions taken at the online meeting, SASSM's chief secretary Syed Anisur Rahman said that the meeting opined that at a time when the National Education Policy 2020 has given a scope for education in various mother tongues, the State Government is taking an enthusiastic initiative to start classes in the English medium in Government schools, which is against the interests of Assam. Moreover, he said, the teachers that the new policy adopted by the State Government would further lower the quality of education in Government and provincialized schools due to lack of familiarity with English-medium instruction on the part of teachers and students alike.

Rahman further said that the SASSM discussed the Government's decision to stop provincialization of schools and informed that they felt that provincialization of services without provincialization of institutions will not be in the public interest. The SASSM urges the Government to carry out necessary amendment to the provincialization Act, Rahman said.

The SASSM also felt that there is no basis to the Government's assertion that there are more schools than students in Assam and hence amalgamation/closure of schools has been initiated. The SASSM questioned as to why the Government is continuing to grant permission for opening of more and more private schools if the number of schools is already high.
