GUWAHATI: Asom Satra Mahasabha (ASM) has sought the Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s intervention in the preservation of the rare manuscripts written by Sri Srimanta Sankardev that were in Madhupur Satra. The manuscripts are on display in Cooch Behar’s district library by digitizing them so that they are accessible for all generations.
In regards to this, Kusum Kumar Mahanta wrote in a letter, “…..We would like to draw your kind attention to the matter concerning the preservation of rare manuscripts of Srimanta Shankardeva, Madhavdeva, and others by creating a digital repository. The primary aim is to digitalize the manuscripts that are in the process of being degraded in Sri Sri Madhupur Satra and Cooch Behar district libraries. These treasured rare books are of tremendous antique value and a source of interest to the researchers. Preservation of these books is the need of the hour when their condition is dilapidating with each passing moment.”
Further, he said, “Digitalizing these rare books will be a matter of Assamese pride and sentiment. Most of the people of Assam have never had the chance to access these materials. If digitized, these books can be used for academic purposes and also make a mark on Assamese culture and intelligentsia in the global intellectual scene. In this regard, we request that you assign the task of digitalization to the National Manuscript Mission and the All India Library Association.”
