Guwahati: In an unfortunate incident, an officer of State Bank of India, Guwahati was ruthlessly thrashed by a few anti-social elements. The officer, Hemanta Kumar Chutia is an employee at SBI's Soneswar Branch in Guwahati.

In a letter to Assam Chief Secretary Sanjay Krishna, Rupam Roy, General Secretary of State Bank of India Officers' Association, North Eastern Circle said that officer Chutia was assaulted while he was returning from office on October 6. The officer was thrashed so mercilessly that his left arm got completely shattered, leaving him with infirmities for life.

Roy said in the letter how bankers have been doing their duty despite the pandemic, and selflessly providing service to the nation. "This is shocking as well as disheartening to see such incidents taking place in our society. Even when many organizations ceased to function, the SBI has always been working for the nation," Roy said in the letter seeking justice for Chutia and all other bank employees who have been assaulted or abused by the public. Roy on behalf of all SBI bank employees has sought stringent punishment against the culprits.

Roy also mentioned the case of Junu Sharma, another SBI employee who was brutally murdered in the broad daylight in October 2018. She was posted in the SBI Dadara branch. However, justice has not yet been done.
