GUWAHATI: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday chaired a review meeting on a range of issues with senior officials of the Excise Department and directed the officials concerned to set up temporary check-points along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border in a bid to check illegal entry of liquor made in the neighbouring State.

The Chief Minister also asked the senior officials to fill-up vacancies in Grade-III and Grade-IV categories, so that the department functions with full capacity and efficiency.

Sarma urged the officials present to carry out their official functions with transparency and honesty. He further assured them of all assistance from the Government in mitigating their genuine grievances related to their work and duties.

Excise Minister Parimal Suklabaidya and Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister Samir Kumar Sinha were present at the meeting along with a host of other senior officials.

During the latest hearing of the matter, the petitioners' counsel informed the court that sealing of the bank's documents in respect of Nagaon, Kaliabor, Mukalmua, Nalbari, Guwahati Branch and Mangaldai had not been done. On the other hand, the Senior Government Advocate produced a communication which stated that the branch of the ASCARD Bank at Hatigaon under the Kaliabor sub-division had closed its operations about two years ago. Another branch at Dr B Baruah Road in Nagaon was found to be in a locked condition.

The court thereupon directed the police to take an official of the ASCARD Bank along with them and thereafter, take custody of the relevant records. The Government's counsel was also directed to issue necessary orders to the police regarding four other branches with a similar lack of progress.
