GUWAHATI: Along with the rest of the world, Shishu Sarothi's SPARSH programme team marked International Sign Language Day recently to protect and support the linguistic identity of people who are deaf, hard of hearing as well as those are deaf-blind and recognize their right to use sign language.

On the occasion, the team held an event to create public awareness about sign language by demonstrating the basics at City Centre Mall here, stated a press release. The team signed the 26 letters of the English alphabet and demonstrated how to sign one's name using the alphabet, say 'hello', 'good morning', 'have a nice day', etc., in Indian Sign Language (ISL), and closed the programme by singing the National Anthem.

The public at the City Centre actively participated in the activities. Radio Mirchi RJ Susmita from Mirchi Guwahati also joined the occasion to sensitize people about sign language as an alternative means of communication with people who are deaf, hard of hearing and deaf-blind.

The UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) and The Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 (RPwD) recognizes and promotes the use of sign languages and equates it with the status to spoken languages.
