GUWAHATI: A section of TET qualified teachers, organized under the banner of 'Sadou Asom Bixex TET Utrinno Santha 2021', has appealed to the State Government for appointment as regular teachers in various schools of Assam.

Talking to the media, the organization's president Dhanjit Pathak said that many persons were engaged as teachers and employees at various levels under the Sarba Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) staring from 2003, under heads such as Education Volunteer (EV), Shiksha Kendra (SK), Sanjogi Shiksha Kendra (SSK), Residential Special Training Centre (RSTC), Non-RSTC, Inclusive Education for Disabled (IED), etc. These teachers were appointed on merit by various management committees at the level of villages, towns, tea gardens etc. The work of these teachers was to teach special categories of children in the 6-14 age group, including those who had never gone to school, drop-out students, children doing menial work in urban areas, children of brick-kiln workers, students who cannot go to school because of poor commuting facilities, those living in villages without schools and schools with inadequate number of teachers.

These teachers worked at honorariums of Rs 1,000 to Rs 3,500 each.

However, Pathak said, the services of most of these teachers were terminated between 2010 and 2012. On the other hand, the services of such teachers were regularized in States like West Bengal, Tripura, Bihar and Arunachal Pradesh.

Pathak said, "We have been appealing to the State Government to appoint us as regular teachers. On February 23, 2016 the then Government gave us a written assurance that it would take steps for appointing us as regular teachers. Later, the new Government led by Sarbananda Sonowal held a Special TET examination for us on October 3, 2021 where 14,575 teachers with Unique ID took part. Out of these, 667 candidates passed the examination on November 3, 2021."

He urged the Government to "unconditionally" appoint these 667 TET qualified persons as regular teachers, as was done in the case of Shiksha Mitras.
