GUWAHATI: The Kamrup (M) election officials have completed groundwork for counting of votes and declaration of results of the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) on Sunday.
Kamrup (M) Deputy Commissioner and District Election Commissioner Pallav Gopal Jha this morning inspected the Maniram Dewan Trade Centre, which houses the strong rooms for Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and will also serve as the counting centre, and reviewed preparedness for the counting process.
Jha informed the media that counting will be carried out in six counting halls and each hall will have six counting tables. Postal ballots will be counted first after the process commences at 7:30 am and counting of EVM votes will start at around 8 am, he said, adding that the counting will be completed in the second half of the day.
The Deputy Commissioner also held discussions with police officials and took stock of security measures put in place for tomorrow's counting process.
It may be recalled that the overall voter turnout in Friday's polling for 57 GMC wards was 52.8 per cent. Candidates in the remaining three wards - Ward No. 5, Ward No. 6 and ward No. 22 - were elected uncontested. All the three candidates are from the BJP.
Of the 197 candidates left in the fray, the BJP has fielded 50 candidates, the Congress fielded has fielded 54 candidates, AGP has fielded 7, AAP has fielded 38, AJP has fielded 25, CPI-M has fielded 4 and others have fielded 19 candidates.
