GUWAHATI: With the theme of 'Only One Earth' and special focus on Living Sustainably in Harmony with Nature, State Bank of India (SBI) on Sunday celebrated World Environment Day. To mark the occasion, State Bank of India, Local Head Office, North Eastern Circle organized a tree plantation drive at the SBOA Public School at Garchuck here, stated a press release. On the occasion Thangboi Lunkim, General Manager (NW-II), SBI NE Circle, Madan LS, Deputy General Manager & CDO, Bikash Basumatary, Deputy General Manager and David Barman, principal of SBOA Public School planted saplings at the school premises.
Speaking on the occasion, Thangboi Lunkim said that it is every human being's duty to protect the biodiversity which is declining perilously. What we do today will determine the fate of biodiversity and life on earth, he said, and urged the gathering of school teachers to encourage young students to plant more trees and choose cleaner and greener lifestyles. Lunkim also distributed tree saplings to the staff members of the school. The event was also attended by other senior SBI officials and all the staff members of the SBOA Public School.
GU celebration: The Gauhati University (GU) NSS Cell, in association with GU Post Graduate Students Union, celebrated World Environment Day at the university campus on Sunday.
According to another press release, the programme started with plantation of a Red Sandal sapling by Dr Ranjan Kumar Kakati, Director of Students' Welfare and Programme Coordinator, NSS Cell of GU.
PCBA celebration: World Environment Day was celebrated by the Regional Office of the Pollution Control Board, Assam (PCBA) in collaboration with Sonapur College & Assam Science Technology and Environment Council (ASTEC) at the Sonapur College auditorium on Sunday.
AALSA celebration: The All Assam Law Students' Association (AALSA) in collaboration with the PG Department of Law, Gauhati University, also celebrated World Environment Day on Sunday.
To make the environment cleaner and healthier, more than 500 trees were planted in the campus of Gauhati University.
Kalakshetra celebration: Supravat Kalakshetra and Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra also celebrated World Environment Day on Sunday. Speaking o the occasion, noted author Anuradha Sarma Pujari said: "People are all part of nature. Every day there should be a resolve to protect nature and environment." A tree plantation drive and a cultural programme were also organized on the occasion.
