GUWAHATI: "The BJP office-bearers and leadership have been always shaping themselves by giving top priority to the progressive changes in society and keeping in sync with the times. Through massive political activities, the party keeps the workers proactive. The party attaches great importance to building a new progressive youth leadership through election campaigns, mass contact programmes, intellectual discussions, etc. The party has given utmost importance to these aspects in connection with the forthcoming election to the Rajya Sabha on March 31 next," said BJP State unit spokesperson Ranjib Kumar Sarma.

In a statement, Sarma said that the selection of Pabitra Margherita, who entered the political arena by joining the BJP a decade ago from the world of culture, as a candidate for the Rajya Sabha election is a classic example of how the party attaches importance to building progressive and forward-looking leadership. Similarly, Sarma said, the selection of former student leader Rwngwra Narzary for the second Rajya Sabha seat by alliance partner UPPL is a pointer to the increase in strength of youth power in State politics.

The BJP spokesperson further said the fielding of Pabitra Margherita and Rwngwra Narzary by the ruling BJP-led alliance has brought to an end the notion that 'Rajya Sabha is a House of Elders'.

Sarma said that the two candidates of the ruling alliance are true representatives of the progressive youth leadership of Assam. While claiming that the victory of the two candidates of the ruling alliance is certain, Sarma termed Congress' candidate Ripun Bora as "an abject failure, weak and frustrated."

"There is no newness in the Congress party. Barring the Gandhi-Vadra families and their stooges in some States, there is no person of stature and dignity in the party," Sarma said, adding that Ripun Bora has been a patron of Badruddin Ajmal's aspiration of forming a "beard-cap-burqa and lungi Government".

Sarma further said that the Congress party, which has cut itself off completely from the indigenous communities, has no other option than to cling on to the Ajmal camp, which has been posing a grave threat to Assam and the Assamese as a whole.
