GUWAHATI: The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) stated that the State Government failed to keep its promise of providing 24-hour power supply to the people of the State and blamed the Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) for not being able to provide electricity to the citizens. The union demanded the state government and APDCL ti take initiative to supply electricity without power cuts to the citizens.

In a statement, in-charge president Utpal Sharma and general secretary Shankarjyoti Baruah said that people had started staging protests as a measure due to the failure of the state government and the APDCL to supply regular electricity.

They also mentioned that at a time when the temperatures are touching 37 degrees Celsius, the load shedding is making the lives of the people more miserable. They also pointed out that the per day demand of the state is about 2500 megawatts, but the state is currently able to source only 1800-2000 megawatts per day, causing a deficit of 500-700 megawatts per day. AASU mentioned that it is the duty of the APDCL and the power department to meet the demands, and they have failed in the same.
