State Government appoints special public prosecutors in six major cases

GUWAHATI: The State Government has appointed special public prosecutors for several major cases.

In a notification issued by the Judicial Department of the State Government, in exercise of powers conferred by Section 24 (8) of the Criminal Procedure Code 1973, the government appointed Advocate Bipul Bhagawati of the Gauhati High Court, as Special Public Prosecutor for Paltan Bazar PS Case No. 193/2023 (GR No. 3183/2023) U/S 307/325/341 IPC R/W Sec 75/80 of Juvenile Justice Act, added Sec 6/17/21 of POCSO Act with immediate effect and until further order. This case involves the doctor-couple, Dr. Sangita Dutta and Dr. Waliul Islam.

The department appointed Adovcate Pallav Kataki of the Gauhati High Court as Special Public Prosecutor for the cases: (i) Dispur PS Case No. 2479/2022 (G.R. No. 9364/2022, PRC No. 718/2023), (ii) Jalukbari PS Case No. 219/2022 (G.R. No. 3258/2022, PRC No. 747/2023), and (iii) Bharalumukh PS Case No. 41/2023 (G.R No. 777/2023, PRC No. 641/2023).

The Department has appointed Advocate Debanga Kumar Baidya of the Gauhati High Court as Special Public Prosecutor to assist Advocate Pallav Kataki, Special Public Prosecutor, during the trial of the following cases: (i) Dispur PS Case No. 2479/2022 (G.R. No. 9364/2022, PRC No. 718/2023); (ii) Jalukbari PS Case No. 219/2022 (G.R. No. 3258/2022, PRC No. 747/2023); and until the department appointed Advocate Debajyoti Talukdar of the Gauhati High Court as Special Public Prosecutor for the cases: (i) Noonmati PS Case No. 480/2022U/S 365/382 IPC, add Section 120(B)/302/201 IPC (GR No. 9375/2022, Session Court Case No. 91/2023) involving Bandana Kalita and her two accomplices murdering Bandana Kalita’s husband and mother-in-law, and (ii) Dispur PS Case No. 2284/2022 U/S 365/387 IPC, Add Section 120(B)/344/364A/302/201 IPC (GR No. 8457/2022, PRC No, 741/2023).

The appointed Special Public Prosecutors will conduct the prosecution of the respective cases in court.
