Assam government committed to redo NRC: Ranjeet Kumar Dass

GUWAHATI: The State government is committed to re-do the NRC (National Register of Citizens) process if the Central government gives the responsibility to do so, said State BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) president Ranjeet Kumar Dass during an interactive session with mediapersons in Guwahati on Friday.

In his address, Dass expressed his gratitude to Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and his cabinet for keeping its 'promises' regarding the development of the State.

"The Government has kept its promises to safeguard jati, mati, bheti, (community, land and base) and develop infrastructure, education, and health sectors. However, it is true that we have not achieved 100 per cent success but we have kept more than 90 per cent of our promises," opined Dass.

He said the BJP-led government promised to present the accurate NRC but due to red tape of the law it was not successful to do so.

"The BJP government objected to the final NRC after four days of its publication. But due to the Supreme Court's red tape we failed to present the accurate NRC. The published NRC didn't include names of lakhs of Indian citizens and had names of suspected citizens. We demanded the SC to allow a 20 per cent verification in the border areas and 10 per cent verification in the general area. However, the SC issued an order that the State government cannot give suggestion to the NRC authorities. We are committed to re-do the NRC process if the Centre gives us the responsibility," Dass asserted.

Further, he expressed confidence that the BJP and its allies will get more than 100 seats in the forthcoming Assam Legislative Assembly Election.

Seeking blessings from the people of the State, Dass hoped that the party will again form government in the State with their support. He also highlighted that the party's organizational works are underway in full swing and it is ready for the polls.

"On January 3, Booth Ki Baat programme will be conducted in 28,000 booths of the party. From January 5 to 11, political rallies will be taken out at booth level. From January 20 to February 20, 30 press in-charges will conduct meetings in 126 constituencies. After February 20, there will not organizational work and the party will go on election mode," Dass added while underlining the party's preparation for the polls.

During the programme, the party's monthly magazine - BJP Barta was released. BJP national general secretary Dilip Saikia, among several other leaders was present in the programme.
