GUWAHATI: The Gauhati High Court has closed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) which alleged that patients who were COVID-19 positive were not being given treatment for their ailments while their cases were being processed for admission in various medical colleges and hospitals in Assam.

Appearing on behalf of the State Government, Advocate General Devajit Saikia told the court that as of now the situation in the State is not such where the hospitals are refusing treatment to patients because they have been declared as COVID-19 positive. On the contrary, Saikia submitted, there are separate wings and isolation wards etc., for COVID-19 patients in the hospitals. He further stated that the State is well-equipped to take care of any medical emergency in the present COVID-19 pandemic.

Thereupon, the court observed that "no useful purpose will be served by keeping this writ petition pending."
