GUWAHATI: The GMC (Guwahati Municipal Corporation) Commissioner directed the owners of shopping malls and business establishments located in Guwahati to stop collecting parking fees from their customers in the form of valet parking. This order came into force with immediate effect.
In an order, GMC Commissioner Devasish Sharma said that the civic body had to issue this order after receiving complaints from the public regarding the collection of parking fees by malls and business establishments from their customers in the name of valet parking.
The GMC Commissioner further said that GMC officials had also observed during their field visits that the malls and business establishments had been collecting parking fees from consumers as valet parking.
The GMC Commissioner spelt it out in no uncertain terms that "when the building permission is guaranteed against a shopping mall sufficient parking facility is to be kept reserved mandatorily in the proposed building, and also during the issuance of the trade licence of any shopping mall, it is checked whether there is enough parking space in the compound for the parking of vehicles of their customers."
The GMC Commissioner said that the charging of parking fees had created a great deal of public resentment.
