GUWAHATI: The Assam Public Works (APW) today warned sympathizers of the United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) that they should stop supporting the banned outfit and its activities if they did not want the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) to be re-imposed in the State.

Addressing a press conference in the city on Tuesday, APW president Abhijit Sarma, while referring to incidents of youths joining the ULFA-I, said, "If this situation continues, the Centre will be compelled to re-impose AFSPA in the State."

The Centre has partially lifted the AFSPA in Assam. He further said, "The ULFA-I is taking advantage of the government's soft approach. If things continue like this, we can foresee bloodshed in the State again. If we see a repeat of the 1990s, the government will be held responsible.

"From 2012 till now, 21 youths of the State have been killed in ULFA camps. What is the status of the peace talks held between the government and the ULFA led by Arabinda Rajkhowa?"

Sarma said that if Paresh Baruah really loved Assam, he should do something useful for the State.
