GUWAHATI: Street Vendor Association of Assam on Friday staged a protest opposing the eviction of 52 street carts from the Panbazar area by GMC (Guwahati Municipal Corporation) on February 5. As per the association, the carts were set up in front of Cotton University and were evicted without any prior notice. Meanwhile, a parking zone has been set up by the GMC in the area. The move has threatened the livelihood of these vendors; however, the GMC stated that the reason for the eviction was ‘unhygienic food quality’. The body demanded that eviction of street vendors should be stopped and the GMC should immediately find a solution for the 52 unemployed vendors. The association also demanded to introduce a food safety law for street carts which they can follow to meet the requirements of the GMC.
