GUWAHATI: Diganta Barah, the Commissioner of Police, Guwahati, called on the people of the city to celebrate the festival of lights to the fullest while following the rules issued by the authorities. He made the comments while addressing the media on Thursday.

Diganta Barah requested that the citizens follow the regulations laid down by the Supreme Court as well as the district administration of the Kamrup (M) District. He called on the public to buy only the crackers allowed by the authorities while explaining how to identify them.

He also mentioned that permission from the DCPs is essential for selling firecrackers in the city, mentioning that action will be taken against those not following the same. He also requested that the citizens not burst crackers in the silent zones or outside the stipulated time zone of 8 PM to 10 PM.

The police official mentioned that the Supreme Court has banned the sale and burning of firecrackers containing barium nitrate. The National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) has defined green crackers as firecrackers made with a reduced shell size, without the use of ash, and with low use of raw materials. They do not include aluminium, barium, potassium nitrate, or carbon. “In order to identify green crackers, customers need to check the CSIP and NEERI logos on the firecracker packaging, labelled in green colour. I request everyone to check the NEERI sticker and logo before purchasing crackers this year,” added Diganta Barah.

Several products fall into this category. They include popular items like chakras, sparkles, pencils, flower pots, etc. Some bombs creating noise levels lower than 125 decibels are also included in this category.
