GUWAHATI: Students of the Gauhati University (GU) on Saturday staged a protest in the campus to display their resentment over a notification whereby the university authority debarred any guest or ex-boarder from staying in any hostel of the university.

The students demanded immediate withdrawal of the notification.

It may be mentioned that the notification dated April 19, which was signed by the secretary in-charge of University Classes of the GU, stated that the decision was taken on the basis of a resolution adopted at the meeting of the Residence Health and Disciplinary Board of the GU, which was subsequently approved by the Vice-Chancellor of the university.

The notification stipulates that if an ex-boarder or unauthorized boarder is staying in any hostel, the Prefect or hostel bearer concerned should immediately notify the matter to the Warden concerned. The notification further warned that failure to report such cases will be considered as gross negligence of duty and disciplinary action will be initiated against the Prefect/hostel staff as per the rules of the university.

Moreover, the notification directed all Prefects of GU hostels to sign an undertaking that they will abide by all the rules and responsibilities listed in the 'Hostel/Halls Rules-2017 within a week of his/her appointment. The notification also banned inter-hostel events at the university even during 'Varsity Week'.

Further, the notification stated that disciplinary/legal action will be taken against any ex-boarder or unauthorized boarder if they stay in hostels of the GU.
