Guwahati: A father figure to many politicians of Assam, veteran Congress leader Tarun Gogoi is considered to be one of the tallest political figures of the state and a visionary and a statesman, under who's leadership Assam progressed a lot, particularly at a time when militancy was still going strong.

As the state mourns the loss of one of Assam's most charismatic leader who had a pan-India presence, we take a look back at some of the key decisions taken by Gogoi in his 15-year tenure (2001-16), steps which helped uplift the state both socially and economically.

During Gogoi's tenure 85 lakh people are said to have got employment in the private as well as government sectors. Lot of self-employment opportunities were created too. Out of the 85 lakh, four lakh were given jobs in various government departments.

The condition of Assam's economy and security was weak and fragile in 2001. However, it improved during Gogoi's tenure, mainly because of better economic management and developing a sense of security.

The veteran leader was also able to increase the per capita income from Rs 13,059 in 2001-02 to Rs 49,480 by the end of 2016. Not only that, the tax collection during Gogoi's tenure rose to a whopping Rs 8,177.26 crore from Rs 1,270.33 crores. The agricultural production of the state also rose from 38.54 tonnes in 2001 to 54.50 tonnes in 2014.

During his tenure, Gogoi was able to achieve the feat of every household in the 17 districts of the state having bank accounts. This has helped people not only in securing their money but also have benefitted from the government on various occasion.

It is indeed a great loss for the state. Gogoi was a politician who was loved and respected across party lines. As many may say. 'the end of an era.'
