Teachers’ association of Assam threatens to move court

GUWAHATI: The Sadou Asom Sanmilita Sikshak Mancha (SASSM) the umbrella organisation of the 12 teachers' associations of the state, mentioned that they are studying the controversial orders of the education department of the state and that they will move to court if found necessary. They mentioned that the orders from the concerned department have disgusted the teachers of the state as they have engaged in activities other than teaching the students.

They mentioned that the organisation is not against the Siksha Setu app or portal, but they demanded the implementation of the necessary infrastructure before using the app. They mentioned that the devices provided by the government for the running of the Siksha Setu App were not of very high quality, and so was the condition of mobile internet in several schools. In those conditions, it makes it impossible to operate the app as per the direction of the department.

In a statement issued, president Ranjeet Borthakur and secretary general Utpal Chakraborty pointed out that when the teachers made the officials aware of the situation, they told the teachers to use personal mobile networks for the operation of the app. They also mentioned that all orders shall have to be given in the form of written notifications in place of oral communications. The organisation asked the teachers not to use their personal devices and asked the officials for a written order. They also pointed out the previous order by the Gauhati High Court with respect to Case No. WP(C) 7119/2021 regarding the RIIMS App, wherein the teachers won't have to use the app using their own mobile phones, wherein the education department had submitted an affidavit saying that the teachers will not have to use their personal devices. And if any written order is issued, the association will be able to move the court, demanding justice.

They also mentioned the recent comment of the education minister, saying that some of the teachers were using the Siksha Setu App as an excuse for not doing the necessary work, which was completely baseless, and asked him to constitute a team of experts to ensure the working of the app. They also added that the association has already formed a committee to look into the problems faced by the teachers and asked the government to constitute a team comprising government officials, SSA members, and members of the association to verify the truth of the matter. They also commented that if solutions are not found for the problems faced by the teachers, they will be forced to take up massive protests.
