GUWAHATI: Teachers' organization Sadou Asom Sanmilita Sikshak Mancha (SASSM) came down heavily on state education minister Ranoj Pegu for his statement on corrupt teachers, asking him to take action against them or refrain from making such comments.
During a college function in Gohpur on Sep 10, Ranoj Pegu had remarked that some teachers showed excess attendance of students and embezzled the mid-day meal materials and other allocations supposedly provided to the fictitious students.
Irked by this statement by the minister, the SASSM asked Pegu to take appropriate action against the allegedly corrupt teachers within a period of one month and make public their names within one week.
The Mancha's general secretary Syed Anisur Rahman flayed the minister's statement, saying the remark shows the minister in a bad light and reflects his own failure. He further said that if no action is taken against the alleged corrupt teachers, they will be further encouraged to continue their swindle. Rahman demanded that strict action must be taken by the minister against the corrupt teachers. Else, he asked Pegu to refrain from making such derogatory statements against teachers.
Rahman said that the comment against the teachers will create mistrust in the minds of the people. He added that the organization had been demanding disassociation of teachers from the mid-day meal scheme for some time now but the department has failed to take any steps in this regard. He reiterated the demand that teachers be stopped from playing any role in distribution or preparation of mid-day meals.
The SASSM general secretary further alleged that the scheme for distribution of tablets to schools to ensure the attendance of students has failed to yield any results as there was no hi- speed internet available in the schools. Rahman demanded that the state government should provide hi-speed internet in schools so that the students' photos can be uploaded at a faster rate than is being done now. The long time taken to upload the information slows down the process and has made the system a total failure. He alleged that providing tablets to the students was done for nothing but creating a shine for the state government.
