GUWAHATI: As part of its protest against the introduction of mathematics and science textbooks in English from Class VI in vernacular medium schools, each regional unit of the AASU (All Assam Students Union) staged a 10-hour fast on Wednesday.

The demand of the student body is to cancel the state government’s decision to introduce mathematics and science textbooks in English from Class VI onwards in every vernacular school. The student body will conclude its agitation on June 6.

The All Guwahati Students’ Union staged a protest near Dighalipukhuri in Guwahati today. In a statement, the union's in-charge president, Utpal Sarma, and general secretary, Shankor Jyoti Baruah, said that the government needs to secure the future of the vernacular languages and schools. They also demanded that the State government take steps to make students learn English efficiently in Assamese, Bodo, and other vernacular schools so that they can read and write the language properly. The AASU does not oppose English terminologies in mathematics and science.
