GUWAHATI: The Union Ministry of Road Transport has given some relief to vehicle owners in Assam in view of the series of lockdowns to control the spread of COVID-19 pandemic. Consequently, the Assam Transport Department has extended the last date for payment of pending Motor Vehicle Tax till Monday, February 28.
According to Gautam Das, Assistant Transport Commissioner and DTO (R&L) Kamrup (M), Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Transport Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary have directed all transport officials of various districts to speed up collection of public revenue from defaulters.
On February 1, the Transport Department started 'Operation All Clear' to mop up pending tax dues from errant vehicle owners. As a result, the department was able to collect more than Rs 10 crore in arrear taxes.
As per official notification, if vehicle owners fail to clear their arrear tax by Monday, then transport authorities will take strong action against them with penalty from March 1.
Heavy fine will also be imposed on the vehicle owners who, taking advantage of the lockdowns, have not paid their arrear tax from the month of February, 2020 onwards.
The vehicle owners can now pay their arrear tax via ATM or debit card at the Betkuchi-based office counter of DTO (R&L) Kamrup (M) or, preferably, they can also pay through online by accessing NEFT, RCG, ECS etc.
