GUWAHATI: A fifth trickster involved in scamming farmers by squeezing at least Rs 20 crore from them through unscrupulous means was caught on Friday. The accused Rubul Ali alias Kamrul Hassan was arrested by BIEO (Bureau of Investigation of Economic Offence) on a tip-off from a secret source at Supermarket. Hassan has been arrested under the BIEOs registered case (11/19 u/s 120(B)/420/406/409/468/471 of IPC) to this effect.

Four tricksters – Rahul Amin, Ranjan Pegu, Himani Basumatary and Bidyut Jyoti Sharma, who were previously arrested, ganged up and floated the Assam Vegetables Growers’ Cooperative Society Ltd (AVGCSL). The recently arrested Rubul Ali alias Kamrul Hasan was the project coordinator of AVGCSL and also worked as an agent on commission.

In the name of this cooperative society, at least Rs 20 crore was collected from different farmers through alluring tactics. The cooperative society promised poor farmers of 90 per cent subsidized grants for purchasing tractors, getting established with fishery, piggery, poultry, dairy etc. The alluring percentage of subsidies led poor farmers to invest their hard-earned money in the cooperative society so as to get themselves established with dividend-paying farming business.
