GUWAHATI: Two accused mobile thieves were shot at by the Guwahati police in separate incidents, leaving them injured on the wee hours of Thursday. One is identified as Mahibul Haque (23) who was shot in the leg while he was about to flee Birubari area. The other is identified as Abhjit Rabha (20), for his involvement in mobile theft activities at Panikhaiti on the outskirts of Guwahati. On an earlier report, the mobile of DIG (L&O) Vivek Raj Singh’s mobile was snatched by Abhjit Rabha.

According to Police Commissioner, Guwahati, Diganata Barah, the mobile snatchers from Guwahati are mostly drug-addicts. They get involved in these snatching activities for their daily dose of drugs. They used scootys which they steal and leave behind after they are done with snatching phones.

According to police sources, two mobile snatchers identified as Dhanjit Boro alias Naga (25) of Birubari area and Sanjeev Baishya (31) of Bhangagarh area were arrested on July 31 in the case number 154/2023 of Geetanagar police station. Dhanjit was brought under police remand, and upon Dhanjit’s confession, another snatcher, Biswajit Rabha (25) of Rupnagar area, was apprehended on August 2 from Fatashil Ambari area. On further interrogation of Biswajit Rabha and Dhanjit Boro, the names of two other snatchers, Abhijit Rabha (20) of Rupnagar and Ujjal Rabha alias Ajay Rabha (26) of Rupnagar, were arrested on the same day from the house of Kalpana Gurung of Bonda Village under Pragjyotishpur PS, where they were hiding. The police also seized one Hero Mastero Scooty with registration ML 09 A 7264 used for snatching in different parts of Guwahati.

Again, as per sources, those snatchers used to hand over the snatched mobile phones to Mahibul Haque, alias Bhaijan, who temporarily stayed in the Katahbari area of Guwahati. He has already been arrested in South Salmara by the Panbazar P under case no. 180/23. Abhijit Rabha further revealed that another snatcher associated with them who is involved in different snatching cases who is hiding in the Panikhaiti area, and at least two numbers of snatched mobile phones are in his possession. Accordingly, in the early morning of Thursday, Geetanagar police led a team to Panikhaiti and apprehended the snatcher.

However, in the morning, at a place in between Bonda and Panikhaiti under Pragjyotishpur PS, accused Abhijit Rabha stopped the police team from leading them to a hideout of the snatcher, but on requesting an urgent urinating call, he suddenly attacked the constable escorting him with a piece of iron rod, causing him injuries to his abdomen, in order to flee from police custody. As a result, the office in charge of Geetanagar PS and other staff tried to stop him to save the constable, but the accused tried to snatch the service pistol of OC Geetanagar Police. In order provide for private defence, the Police team fired Abhijit Rabha on his lower part of the body, sustaining an injury to his right leg. He was immediately shifted to GMCH. In relation to the incident, an FIR has been lodged at Pragjyotishpur PS under Case No. 106/2023 U/S 333/307/224/511 IPC.

On the other hand, two people identified as Jitu Boro and Lobo Boro, both of Bhangagarh Milan Nagar, were arrested on July 25. During the interrogation, they admitted to having committed the snatching of mobile phones, and they used to hand over those snatched phones to Mahibul Haque. Based on their confession, Mahibul Haque was arrested. A total of seven mobile phones and one tablet were recovered.

Mahibul Haque was taken to Birubari, Jyoti Path Hill side, under Paltanbazar PS in order to arrest the other accused persons involved in the recovery and snatching of mobile phones in Guwahati. The team reached Birubari Jyoti Path Hillside in pursuit of searching for the possible hideout of the other accused. Mahibul Hoque took advantage of UBC Pankaj Thakur supervising him alone with the rest of the team at a little distance, then pulled Pankaj Thakur down on the ground. Then the accused picked up a piece of block and attacked the head of Pankaj Thakur, who was lying on the ground. SI (P) Jitul Das took out his service pistol and fired a round towards the leg of Mahibul in defence, as a result of which the accused sustained a bullet injury on his right leg. The accused was rushed to GMCH for medical treatment. In this connection, an FIR has been lodged at Paltanbazar PS, Case No. 341/2023, u/s 224/323/353/307 IPC.
