GUWAHATI: A UNESCO team will finally arrive in Assam on October 7 to visit the Charaideo Maidam which has been nominated for the World Heritage Site status. The team will evaluate and examine the Charaideo Maidam based on the dossier which the Assam Government had sent to the UNESCO headquarters in Paris through the Government of India earlier this year. The UNESCO team will be accompanied by a team of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and assisted by officials of the Directorate of Archaeology, Government of Assam. The district administration of Sivasagar and Charaideo districts will provide logistic support.
Sources said that after the visit, UNESCO may suggest some corrective measures if required. It is likely that the proposal for inclusion of the Charaideo Maidam in the World Heritage Site list will be placed during the UNESCO conference that will be held in mid-2024. This year, the Charaideo Maidam was the lone nomination from India for the World Heritage Site tag. The maidams are the burial mounds of the Ahom Swargadeos and members of the royal family.
