GUWAHATI: The Assam Police have drawn up a list of 680 personnel who are found unfit for duty. They will be offered voluntary retirement after a thorough review, Director General of Police (DGP) GP Singh said.

Addressing a press conference in Guwahati today, the DGP said, “To ensure that no name is added without logical basis, we have formed committees in every battalion and district, which will be headed by a deputy commandant or an additional SP-rank officer. These committees will give their reports to the district superintendents of police (SPs) or battalion commandants, who will then “after due diligence on their part” submit the reports to the police headquarters, where again the reports will be reviewed by a committee which will have people from training and armed police wings as well as law and order and administration. The committee will prepare the final list of police personnel who will be offered Voluntary Retirement Scheme (VRS), said the DGP.

“This will take some time. The basic idea of streamlining the process in such a manner is that no wrong person is offered VRS. We had meetings with other organizations of Assam Police and they have been directed to take similar action and draw up their respective lists of personnel who we can consider as deadwood for the police organization,” said Singh.

He further said that the orientation of the new recruits will focus on maintaining physical fitness, which is a priority area for Assam Police for all its ranks and personnel. He said that the Indian Police Service (IPS) and Assam Police Service (APS) officers have been asked to lead by example. They have been given 3-4 months to become physically fit. “We cannot give VRS to lower ranks of the police force for being unfit when we have disproportionately obese officers at senior levels,” he said.

The DGP said that by the second half of this year there will be a Body mass index (BMI) assessment for police personnel that will decide the future course of action. Those who are unwilling to take VRS will not be assigned field duty, he added.

On the other hand, the State-level Police Recruitment Board (SLPRB) conducted recruitment drive for filling up 5,730 posts. Of these posts, there are 1,407 posts in the Assam Police, 412 posts in DGCD&CGHG, 556 posts in APRO, 43 posts in F&ES, 303 posts in Prison Department, 222 posts in Excise and 2,787 posts in the Forest Department.

The result of the recruitment drive was declared today. Candidates have been selected for 5,421 posts while 309 posts will remain vacant as suitable candidates have not been found to fill up these posts. Out of the selected candidates, 1,279 candidates have been selected in Assam Police, 307 candidates in DGCD&CGHG, 553 candidates in APRO, 39 candidates in F&ES, 301 candidates in Prison Department, 222 candidates in Excise Department and 2,720 candidates have been selected in Forest Department.
