Unlicensed, unhygienic meat vendors creating a health hazard in Guwahati

GUWAHATI: It has come to light that around 800 chicken sellers are running their business in the city without obtaining trade licenses from the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC). Moreover, over 100 vendors are selling pork and mutton under very unhygienic conditions in the city.

Health experts say that people craving meat face a higher risk of getting infected with multiple bacterial diseases from infected chicken, mutton and pork. They also face the risk of suffering from viral diseases that cause high fever, stomach-related ailments and reproductive health issues in both males and females.

The vegetarians, on the other hand, are exposed to the risk of airborne ailments from infected birds and animals that are kept in open spaces for sale.

GMC veterinarian Pradip Medhi said that the civic body has been carrying out drives against illegal vending of meat despite manpower shortage, but the trade is still continuing. Medhi alleged that some meat vendors' associations are resisting the drives against the illegal sale of meat.

"We face trouble during such drive. There were occasions when we faced life-threatening situations. The GMC has been facing revenue losses due to the rise in such illegal meat shops in the city. We had busted several meat shops earlier and disposed of the meat in the dumping ground," he said.
