Guwahati: Former Chief Minister of Assam, Tarun Gogoi turned 86-years old on Sunday. A three-time CM, Gogoi was born at Rangajan Tea Estate at Jorhat.
Veteran leader of Congress, Gogoi is Assam's longest-serving Chief Minister. He is fond of reading books of history and contemporary topic, and gardening.
He started his career in 1969, as a ward member of Jorhat Municipality. Later in 1971, he was elected as a Member of Parliament. He served for six terms till 2001 from Titabor and Koliabor. He served as the CM from 2001 to 2016.
In 1976, when Gogoi was elected as the Joint Secretary of the All India Congress Committee under the then Prime Miniter Indira Gandhi, he became a political leader with national stature.
Gogoi became a political leader of national stature after he was elected Joint Secretary of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) in 1976 under Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. He was the president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) from 1986 to 1990. He also served as the Member of the Legislative Assembly from 1986 to 2001.
Gogoi recently suffered from COVID 19 and is currently undergoing treatment at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital.
