POOR STATE OF WATER RESOURCES DEPARTMENT

After Minister's sudden visit to Chief Engineer's office, skeletons tumble out of the cupboard

Department authority directed to clean up office within period of seven days

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI: Water Resources Minister Pijush Hazarika on Thursday ordered a salary cut for one day of 14 employees of the Chief Engineer's office of the Water Resources Department at Chandmari here on Thursday.

This decision was taken during the sudden visit of the Minister to the office. During the visit, the Minister found that these 14 employees were absent from duty without taking any permission from the authority concerned.

Incidentally, the official register also showed that 10 other employees were absent from duty only after getting permission. There are 356 employees in the head office of the Department's Chief Engineer.

During the meeting held with employees of the office, the Minister pointed out, "During the time of annual floods, we can shift 30% of the 356 employees in this office to the districts and subdivisions as field officials. I believe this will streamline the department to a great extent."

The Minister was also quite angry at "the very poor hygienic situation of the office and its premises in general". He ordered that the entire office complex must be cleaned up within a week.
