GUWAHATI: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the State Government has pledged to root out child marriage in the state by 2026.

Speaking at the Mahiyasi Award 2023 ceremony organized by Ratnam, an NGO, and the Assam State Women's Commission at the Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra here today, the Chief Minister said, "The state now has two classes of women. While a section of women has made strides with their own abilities, the other section becomes mothers of three or four children before attaining 18 or 19 years of age. The State Government wants women to come forward to root out child marriages in the state."

The Chief Minister said, "The award is given to women for their exceptional contributions to society. Picking up women who display special performance in their work places for these awards makes women strong partners in the development of society. Writer Hemoprabha Bora Sonowal, weaver Hemanti Doley Chukrang, folk artiste Baijayanti Nath Talukdar, social worker Bhanu Tanti, who is fighting against child marriage and drugs in tea gardens, and Snehalata N Sangma, who extends nursing services, received the awards today."

The Chief Minister said, "Earlier, women personalities like Indira Miri, Mamoni Raisom Goswami, Amalprabha Das, Nalinibala Devi, Nirmalprabha Bordoloi, and others left indelible ideals in the state. Now, Lovlina Borgohain, Hima Das, Nayanmoni Saikia, and others are taking the state forward at the international fora."
