GUWAHATI: A one-day state-level workshop for Gaon Panchayat Secretaries, Lat Mandals, and Gaon Pradhans on child marriage, child trafficking, and cybercrime was organised by the Assam State Commission for Protection of Child Rights at NEDFi House, Guwahati, on Wednesday. The workshop was attended by Panchayat Secretaries, Gaon Pradhans, and Lat Mandals of the BTR districts of Udalguri, Baksa, Chirang, Dhubri, and Dhemaji.
Phanindra Bujar Baruah, a member, welcomed all the participants and briefed them about the functions and powers of ASCPCR as well as a background on child rights. To protect and promote child rights, the stakeholders must work in collaboration because, unlike adults, children cannot protest when their rights are violated.
It was followed by a documentary screening on child trafficking, Slaughtered Dreams, directed by Angshu M. Kotoky and produced by Dr. Sunita Changkakati. Social activist Surendra Tadkhelkar spoke briefly about how village panchayats can form the backbone of a child-friendly village.
Focused on the issues of child marriage, child trafficking, and cyber safety, Dr. Sunita Changkakati, Chairperson ASCPCR, Members Dr. Pilu Hazarika, Dr. Rupa Hazarika, and Shri Ajoy Kumar Dutta, along with Inspector Bijoya Das on behalf of Assam Police, shared their valuable inputs with the participants for wider dissemination of information about promotion and protection of child rights by developing a stronger multi-stakeholder approach.
