GUWAHATI: The North Eastern Regional Office, Guwahati of M/s Engineering Projects (India) Limited, a Government of India enterprise, celebrated World Blood Donor Day on Tuesday. This year's theme of World Blood Donor Day is 'Donating blood is an act of solidarity, Join the effort and save lives'.
Mukesh Thakur, Regional In-charge, EPI, Guwahati, welcomed the chief guest, Dr Dipankar Baruah, in-charge, Blood Bank, Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). Dr Baruah explained the importance of regular blood donation by a sufficient number of healthy people to ensure that blood will always be available wherever it is needed. "Blood is the most precious gift that anyone can give to another person. A decision to donate your blood can save a life or even several lives if your blood is separated into its components - red cells, platelets and plasma - which can be used individually for patients with specific conditions," he said. He urged the gathering to come forward for voluntary blood donation.
Mukesh Thakur and Dr Baruah administered the World Blood Donor Day, 2022 pledge to persons present in the gathering. To mark this occasion, EPI's employees posted in the North Eastern Regional Office voluntarily donated blood at the GMCH Blood Bank, stated a press release.
On the other hand, the Assam State Blood Transfusion Council (ASBTC) also observed World Blood Donor Day across the State. The state-level function was held at the Sri Sri Madhabdeva International Auditorium, Kalakshetra, Guwahati.
Speaking on the occasion as chief guest, Principal Secretary to the Government of Assam, Avinash Joshi said, "Most of the deaths occur due to scarcity of blood in hospitals and therefore people, especially the youngsters, should come forward and donate blood voluntarily. It must be ensured at that at least no death occurs due to scarcity of blood." He added, "Human body is the only factory which produces blood and therefore every youngster should take the pledge to donate blood at least 15 times during their lifetime." He further lauded the armed forces for donating blood at frequent intervals and said that 50 per cent of the donated blood comes from the armed forces.
