GUWAHATI: World Coconut Day was celebrated by the Coconut Development Board, Regional Office, Guwahati, on September 2 at Momai Tamuli Auditorium Hall, Directorate of Horticulture and Food Processing, Khanapara, Guwahati. Subrata Roy Bardhan, Secretary to the Government of Assam, Department of Agriculture, was the chief guest of the programme.

On this occasion, Dr. Govindaswamy Kadirvel, Director of ICAR-ATARI, Rajiv Ashok, Managing Director, NERAMAC, Guwahati, Nabin Kumar Roy, General Manager, NABARD, and other dignitaries were present at the World Coconut Day Celebration. Dr. Rajat Kumar Pal, Director of CDB, Guwahati, welcomed all invited guests, dignitaries, and coconut farmers.

The main significance of the World Coconut Day Celebration is to commemorate the formation of the Asian and Pacific Coconut Community (APCC), which includes 20 countries. Major producers are India, Indonesia, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Mexico, and Vietnam. India stands first in production and productivity and third in area under Indonesia and the Philippines.

World Coconut Day is celebrated every year to promote and raise awareness of the importance of coconut fruit to our health, wellness, environment, and alleviating poverty. About 110 farmers, producers, coconut farmers, and entrepreneurs were present in the programme, stated a press release.
