GUWAHATI: The Assam Photojournalists Association celebrated World Photography Day at the Gauhati Press Club on Saturday. Attending as a chief guest, prominent educationist Dr. Amarjyoti Chowdhury said, “Photojournalists have a special place in the media, and they have been contributing to society through their work. He expressed concern over the lack of special space for photojournalists in theatres. Commissioner of Police, Guwahati, Diganta Barah, attending as a guest, said, “A photo tells a story and history.” The event began with an exhibition of 130 photographs by 14 photojournalists.
The Assam Photojournalists Association, to mark World Photography Day, honours a photo journalist every year. This year the award was presented to a senior photojournalist of the Assamese Pratidin newspaper, Dhaniram Kalita. The award includes a gamocha, japi, cheleng chadar, citation, and a cash prize of Rs 10,000. The event was hosted by journalist Pallavi Bora.
The event was attended by Prashant Rajguru, Prag News Editor; Achyut Patwari, Chief Assistant Editor of Axomiya Pratidin; Amal Das, Executive Editor of Niyomiya Barta, Sanjeev Phukan, Executive Editor of Janambhumi; Biswajit Das, Executive Editor of Axomiya Khabar; AASU Vice President Bipul Rabha; and Secretary General of the All Assam Tribal Sangha, Aditya Khakhlari. Singer Tarali Sharma also attended the programme as a guest. The event was attended by the President of the Assam Photojournalists Association, Chinmoy Roy, Secretary Reba Kumar Borah, and other members, stated a press release.
