GUWAHATI: The WPT&BC (Welfare of Plain Tribes and Backward Classes) Department has asked the Karbi Development Council (KDC) to submit various schemes which they wish to implement, within June 28. The KDC was formed under the WPT&BC Department on February 26, 2021, for the development of plain Karbis. The 32-member council is headed by chairman Ranjeet Rahang.

Talking to The Sentinel, Rahang said, "The development council was formed for the welfare of the Karbis residing in the plain areas. There are around 4 to 5 lakh Karbis in the State. The WPT&BC Department has allocated a Rs 32.86 lakh grant in aid to the council for the year 2021-22. The funds were allocated by the former Sonowal government. However, the funds will be sanctioned after we submit the schemes to the Department within June 28."

Rahang underlined that the funds will be used to promote culture, sports and skill development among the Karbi community. "With this amount, the problems of our people will not be solved. The full budget for the year will be presented on July 16. Thus, we will submit a memorandum to the Chief Minister and Finance Minister highlighting various schemes that we wish to implement," added Rahang.
