Writ petition filed over anomalous recruitment to Assam's Industries and Commerce Department

GUWAHATI: The recent recruitment of eight officers to Assam's Industries and Commerce Department has landed in litigation, with one unselected person filing a Writ Petition in the Gauhati High Court to challenge the fairness of the entire process.

The respondents have been appointed to posts such as functional manager, project manager and deputy manager.

Petitioner Rupam Kalita has alleged that the Assam Public Service Commission (APSC), which did the selection, added the names of the eight appointees at a later stage after their candidature had been initially rejected. Kalita maintains that the whole process of these candidates' names being inducted into an additional list, the interview and their selection was done in just a week's time.

During hearing of the matter, the High Court observed that most of the selected candidates had already joined duty and, hence, it was "not inclined at this stage to restrain the private respondents from joining in their respective posts."

However, the court made it clear that the appointment of these eight persons "shall be subject to the final outcome of the present writ petition."

It sought a response within four weeks from the Industries and Commerce Department and APSC, besides the appointees.

This means that the door has been left open for scrapping of these appointments at a future date.
