‘Rename Nagaon LAC as Batadrova LAC and give a different name to existing Batadrova LAC’

GUWAHATI: The Bordowa Than, which has the name and fame of Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev etched on it, has come under the Nagaon LAC (Legislative Assembly Constituency) in the Election Commission of India’s (ECI’s) draft delimitation proposals for Assembly and Parliamentary constituencies of Assam. Those at the helm of affairs of the Than have no objection to the proposed inclusion of the Than into the Nagaon LAC. They would rather welcome the move with a rider that the Nagaon LAC be renamed Batadrova LAC.

Speaking to The Sentinel, Bordowa Than’s (Narua Xatra) Xatradhikar Debananda Dev Goswami said, “The Borduwa Than is under the Batadrova LAC in the Nagaon district and Koliabor HPC (House of People Constituency). According to the draft proposal published by the ECI yesterday, the Than will be in Nagaon LAC and HPC. We welcome this proposal. We, however, want the name of the Nagaon LAC to be renamed Batadrova LAC in the final delimitation exercise. The name of the Than should remain intact in the LAC, wherever it is included. This is because the Than has all those connected to the Mahapurush etched on it.”

The Xatradhikar also said, “The ECI has excluded the Than and named an LAC as Batadrova, comprising some other localities. Since the LAC will not have the Batadrova Than, the ECI should give the LAC a different name other than Batadrova. Why should an LAC bear the name ‘Batadrova’ where there are no Bordowa residents? We, however, have no objection to being included in the Nagaon HPC.”

The Xatradhikar said that he had sent a message to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma requesting him to rename the proposed Nagaon LAC as Batadrova LAC and give a different name to the existing Batadrova LAC. He further said that they would make their opinion known to the ECI.
